Millionaire sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein found dead in jail

Jailed multi-millionaire financier and accused sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein has died in ‘an apparent suicide’ at a prison in New York, according to two law enforcement sources on Saturday.
Epstein, 66, who was awaiting trial on charges of sex trafficking of dozens of underage girls, some as young as 14 years old, was found unresponsive in his cell at Metropolitan Correctional Centre at around 6.30 am.Epstein was rushed to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, the bureau said in a statement while calling the reason of death as ‘an apparent suicide’.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation is probing the incident. A federal official told that no foul play is suspected in his death.
According to a law enforcement source, Epstein hanged himself.
Last month, Epstein was placed on a suicide watch after he was found on July 23 in his Manhattan jail cell with marks on his neck.
The multi-millionaire financier alleged that he was beaten up and called a child predator, according to sources.
Epstein had been behind the bars since July when he pleaded not guilty to charges by New York federal prosecutors after an indictment accused him of running a sex racket of teenage girls.
A judge had rejected a bail request from him in that month.
Prosecutors had unsealed an indictment accusing Epstein of running a prostitution racket with the underage girls at his Upper East Side residence and his estate in Palm Beach, Florida, between 2002 and 2005.
In 2007, Epstein faced similar accusations in Florida but he signed a plea agreement with Miami prosecutors allowing him to plead guilty to lesser state sex trafficking charges and avoiding federal charges.
On Friday, new details of sexual abuse claims against Epstein and several associates surfaced during the unsealing of court documents in a New York federal court.

‘Article 21, right to life and liberty, can never be suspended’

‘The government, through the media, is saying that everything is normal in Kashmir, but I just want them to give this in writing and let a judicial commission see it.’Congress activist Tehseen Poonawalla approached the Supreme Court on Thursday against the government’s decision to impose restrictions on the people in Jammu and Kashmir after revoking provisions of Article 370 in the state.

Why have you moved the Supreme Court against the Centre regarding the clampdown in Kashmir?

I support the decision to abrogate Article 370 and ensuring that the Indian Constitution apply in the state; I am not challenging that.
I am very clear about that but if the Indian Constitution applies then Article 21 (states that everyone has the right to life, liberty and the security of person) is absolute and it can never be suspended and even the Kesavananda Bharati case says that (Kesavnanda Bharati versus State of Kerala 1973 upholds the supremacy of the Indian Constitution and prevented authoritarian rule by a single party and the moot question was can Parliament of India alter, amend, abrogate any part of the Constitution even to the extent of taking away all fundamental rights).

Therefore, I want the government to ensure that right to food, right to healthcare services is present and there is no difficulty. Article 19 (freedom of speech) and Article 14 (equality before law) can never be suspended and people must have rights under these articles of the Indian Constitution. The government, through the media, is saying that everything is normal in Kashmir, but I just want them to give this in writing and let a judicial commission see it.
But the main petition is Article 21, right to food, healthcare and milk products can never be suspended.
But what we saw on Wednesday in Kashmir was that the situation was improving; National Security Advisor Ajit Doval was in Shopian and interacted with locals of south Kashmir.
I believe them and I agree with them so let the government give this in an affidavit.
It has been only three days since Article 370 was diluted. Don’t you think you are rushing to file this affidavit too soon?
You just told me that everything is normal and NSA Ajit Doval is there too. I am simply asking that the government give this in an affidavit. What is wrong in that?

What Ajit Doval is saying and what you are saying and I am also saying is the same thing and we are on the same page. Am I saying Article 370 should stay? I am saying the Indian Constitution should stay. Government is saying food is available in J-K and Ajit Doval is saying the same, I am just saying give it in writing. What is wrong in that?

Kashmiris who aren’t in the state have been tweeting that the situation is bad. Do you believe them?

I believe Ajit Doval. I am just saying that whatever Ajit Doval’s released video give it on an affidavit. Let the court see itself. Where is the question of not believing?
Did I say anything about Kashmiri tweeting from abroad? Have I mentioned about them? Do I care about them? I care about the Indian Constitution and that’s it. The matter ends there.
I don’t know why you are getting into what people abroad tweet, how does it matter to me? I believe what my government is saying.

Has there been any example in the past where this kind of clampdown has happened in Independent India?
Article 21 of the Indian Constitution can never be suspended. That is the factual position in law. Now is it or is it, not let the government give in writing. The government through Ajit Doval says it isn’t. I am saying give it in writing — story ends there.
There is no question of what happened in the past. What happened in the past cannot be a justification for what happened now.

One last push: Modi govt to take up Triple Talaq Bill in Lok Sabha today

Triple Talaq Bill in Lok Sabha: Law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad will face stiff opposition in the lower house despite absolute majority enjoyed by the govt. With just two days left in the ongoing Parliament session, NDA government has finally decided to take up the Triple Talaq Bill for discussion and passage in the Lok Sabha today. Law and justice minister Ravi Shankar Prasad will take up the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019 for discussion and passage. Modi government reintroduced the bill in the Lok Sabha last month amid a bitter debate with the opposition. The bill that seeks to replace an ordinance to ban the practice of instant oral divorce practiced by some Muslims in the country was introduced by a majority vote in the lower house amid noisy protests by the opposition parties.
In February this year, President had promulgated the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Ordinance, 2019 (No. 4 of 2019) after Prime Modi’s government had failed to pass the bill in the Rajya Sabha just before the national election in April-May.
The Lok Sabha is expected to see noisy scenes as six opposition members including Adhir Ranjan Chowdhary, the leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha, have moved a statutory motion to oppose the bill. Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, TMC member Saugata Roy, AIMIM’s Asaduddin Owaisi, RSP’s NK Premchandran and Indian Union Muslim League’s (IUML) PK Kunhalikutty have moved a statutory motion to oppose the Triple Talaq Bill.
The bill is expected to be passed in the Lok Sabha as the ruling BJP has an absolute majority in the house on its own. However, it lacks the numbers in the Rajya Sabha. Even support of NDA parties is not enough and its floor managers in the Rajya Sabha need to rope in non-NDA parties like TRS, BJP, and YSRCP.
The task of Modi government has become even more daunting as its ally JD(U) has opposed the bill in its present form.
But the united opposition is determined to block the bill in the upper house as it had blocked the bill just ahead of the Lok Sabha elections held early this year.
Although, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was keen to implement this important legislation in his first term and had sought oppositions support for the bill but an united opposition had blocked its passage in the Rajya Sabha.
The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019
The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage), Bill, 2019 (popularly known as Triple Talaq Bill) is considered important social reform pushed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The law aims to end the practice of an instant oral divorce practiced by a section of Muslims in the country.
The law seeks to protect Muslim wives from the instant divorce by pronouncing the word ‘Talaq’ thrice in quick succession. Sometimes it is conveyed to Muslim wives over the phone, SMS or WhatsApp message.

Ganguly slams selectors for ignoring Gill, Rahane for WI tour

Former India skipper Sourav Ganguly on Wednesday said he was surprised to not see Shubman Gill and Ajinkya Rahane in the ODI squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against West Indies.

Time has come for Indian selectors to pick same players in all formats of the game for rhythm and confidence.

Former India skipper Sourav Ganguly on Wednesday said he was surprised to not see Shubman Gill and Ajinkya Rahane in the ODI squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against West Indies.

In a tweet, Ganguly wrote, “There are many in the squad who can play all formats ..surprised not to see Shubman gill ..Rahane in the one-day squad”.
“Time has come for Indian selectors to pick same players in all formats of the game for rhythm and confidence.. too few are playing in all formats ..great teams had consistent players ..it’s not about making all happy but picking the best for the country and be consistent..@bcci,” Ganguly tweeted.
On Sunday, India had announced the squads for the upcoming T20Is, ODIs and Test match series against West Indies.

Many people expressed their displeasure over the omission of Gill from the squad as the player enjoyed good form in the recently-concluded five-match unofficial ODI series between India A and West Indies A.

The player went on to amass 218 runs in the series against West Indies A.

After India were knocked out of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in the semi-finals, former BCCI Secretary, Sanjay Jagdale had backed Rahane to be the number four batsman in the ODI format.

“In my opinion, the Indian team needs a batsman like Ajinkya Rahane at number four. We have tried many options at the batting position for the past three months. We tried those batsmen who did not have a good record overseas. Rahane has always scored good runs in England,” Jagdale had told ANI.

Team India chief selector MSK Prasad on Sunday had announced the squads at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai for the upcoming series in Windies. Putting all speculations to rest about India captain Virat Kohli’s participation in the limited-overs series, he was chosen to lead the team in all formats.

Dhawan, who was ruled out of the World Cup after sustaining an injury to his left hand in the region between the index finger and thumb, returned for both ODIs and T20Is. Meanwhile, fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah was rested for three ODIs and as many T20Is.

Veteran wicket-keeper batsman MS Dhoni was rested as well; Rishabh Pant will be keeping the wickets for the team. Pant has been named across all three formats and Wriddhiman Saha found a spot in the two Tests.
